We can all agree that Cyrus was a big deal on Scandal. As Chief of Staff he was always scheming and making deals. Hewas a key part of the show. However, he was forced to leave.

It was not like simply changing jobs that he was asked to leave. He was made redundant whereas this story looks at the reasons why he had to leave and explains what was done by him and why his actions led to his losing all of his power.

Cyrus Beene, the cunning and fiercely loyal Chief of Staff on Scandal did not depart the show voluntarily. The departure was more of a forced resignation. In the final episode Cyrus’s relentless ambition and selfish tactics ultimately result in his downfall.

Cyrus is able to orchestrate the poisoning of David Rosen showing the desperation he had as his attempt to manipulate Mellie Grant into becoming President. Tracy ultimately however manages to expose this plan to Rowan Pope who testifies against Cyrus to protect Olivia Pope and The Gladiators.

Confronted with the weight of his own crimes and betrayal Cyrus was only able to make a decision of his own accord, which was to resign from his position.

Although he managed to avoid any kind of legal repercussions he still lost his power, his influence and the respect of those that he had previously commanded.

Why Was Cyrus so Ambitious and Willing to do Anything?

Cyrus in “Scandal” didn’t just want power, but also wanted the respect of people and in his past he felt the need for attention that would attract respect from people. He thought being of importance in society would lead to the respect he craved, but this demand of recognition was mixed up with a similar need to want power in the process of acting disgruntled at his past.

Cyrus never truly believed that what he thought he was doing was internally correct for the nation. This attitude led him to believe that he was justified in committing bad acts as long as they had the potential to bring “greater good”.

He viewed himself as a person who was forced to make difficult decisions even if they were wrong and it is in this way that he was highly loyal to Mellie Grant. He deemed that even if his actions were incorrect that he was to consider success of the country as being the same as Mellie Grant being successful.

How Did Cyrus Leaving Affect Olivia and Rowan?

Cyrus and Olivia’s relationship was very complicated. Initially, Cyrus his like a mentor to Olivia and he taught her how to navigate the political landscape. Cyrus felt that he was capable of picking them up whose political yardstick, and therefore helped and molded her so that she became a powerful official.

But when Olivia started her own company it became apparent that she had left a gap as there was essentially rivalry between them, despite the fact that they still cared about each other. Cyrus’s ambition fell in conflict with Olivia’s. He had an insatiable desire for power and at times this resulted in him disregarding these notional boundaries and often he would go against her.

Olivia on the other hand while not himself often lacked an inner moral compass. Cyrus’s willingness to go beyond the accepted boundaries and cross cautious lines was much to her chagrin and therefore it created a gulf in their relationship.

As Olivia began to gain more influence, Cyrus began to feel threatened by her activity. He felt her as a competitor and not as a friend and because of this fear he engaged in bad decisions. Such as when he tried to frame her, he alienated both Olivia and his allies the Gladiators. Ultimately this fear and devotion to Olivia led to his downfall as the broken relationship was a critical part of the story of his career.
